Who will replace Joe Burrow as Bengals QB after his season-ending injury?
The Cincinnati Bengals are in deep trouble this season. Their franchise quarterback, Joe Burrow, suffered a wrist injury during the Bengals’ Thursday Night game against the Baltimore Ravens. That injury has eventually ruled him out for the season. The Bengals lost the game against the Ravens and have now slipped to 5-5 for the season. With Burrow out, the quarterbacking duties will fall on the shoulders of backup QB Jake Browning.
The Bengals started the season losing three of their first four games. Burrow was dealing with a calf injury at the beginning of their campaign and that hampered the team’s offense. However, the star QB recovered by week 5 and the Bengals won four games in a row as a result of that. Since then, the Bengals have dropped two games and with Burrow out for the season, their playoff hopes have taken a massive hit.
Browning will take the field for the Bengals in their next game and for the remainder of the season. The 27-year-old QB signed as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019. He served as the Vikings’ backup QB for a couple of years before being waived in 2021. He signed with the Bengals in September 2021 and has been with the team ever since. Browning has played in a couple of games this season in garbage time and has thrown for 68 yards and one touchdown.
The Bengals have lost their last two games and are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020. They will play their next game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday and will hope to bounce back against their division rivals.
Joe Burrow opened up about his injury after the Bengals-Ravens game
Joe Burrow’s up-and-down season has come to a premature end. The fourth-year signal-caller suffered a wrist injury against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday and was ruled out for the season. He was replaced by backup QB Jake Browning en route to the Cincinnati Bengals losing the game, 34-20. Burrow talked about his injury after the game.
Burrow said on Friday:
The play before it happened, I landed on the wrist a little bit, and the next play, the touchdown pass, just felt a pop in the middle of the throw. Tried to give it a go but just couldn't get it done, and obviously got the news today, so not great.
He left the game having tallied 101 passing yards and one touchdown.
The Bengals will look to make the playoffs without Burrow. They still have a lot of talented players on both sides of the ball and Browning knows the offense since he has been with the Bengals since 2021. However, the absence of Burrow going forward will be a huge loss for the Bengals.
