Sheriff says inmates who refused to change housing units sparked 'incident' at jail

The Bristol County Sheriff’s Office responded on Friday to an incident at the House of Corrections in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

"The Bristol County Sheriff’s Office is taking steps to make the facility more suicide-resistent. Part of this process is moving inmates to different housing units. Friday morning, some inmates in one of the housing units did not want to move, leading to the current incident," a spokesman for the sheriff's office noted in an email to WJAR.

Authorities said all staff members were accounted for and there was no indication that prisoners have taken other prisoners hostage.

Dozens of law enforcement officers responded.

WJAR is at the scene and said the facility is blocked off.

A news crew observed about a dozen guards in what appeared to be riot gear walk away from the facility.

Few details have been released.

The office said it was working on gathering information.

Sheriff Paul Heroux will address the media at some point on Friday, according to his office.
