NASCAR reportedly set to race at Mexico City in 2025
NASCAR has primarily raced across the states for decades. Apart from holding a few exhibition races in Japan and Australia, the sport’s international presence has declined over the years. However, to change this trend, NASCAR is reported to introduce a race in Mexico City in 2025 at the famous Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez or the Mexico City track was built in 1959 by Mexico’s famous racing brothers. The 2.7-mile track has remained largely unchanged and has become a staple in F1 and the Formula E calendars. The circuit is 1.2 miles above sea level, which enables race cars to reach their VMAX speed at the home stretch despite running high downforce specifications.
According to Motorsport.com, the Mexican track is slated to make its debut on the NASCAR calendar for the 2025 season. This would make the first time since the 1950s, a points-paying race would be held internationally for NASCAR Cup Series and globalize the sport. Moreover, a change in the track layout is in discussion as organizers consider adding a chicane on the main straight to reduce top speeds.
Daniel Suarez gives his verdict on the rumors surrounding Mexico to host a Cup Series race
NASCAR’s predomination within the states has led to the assumption that all NASCAR drivers get to have at least one home race in a season. However, this cannot be said for No.99 car driver Daniel Suarez, who was born and brought up in Mexico, and NASCAR moving to his home nation could mean the fulfillment of a dream for him.
Subsequently, when the 32-year-old got to know about the rumors of NASCAR moving to Mexico City, he was ecstatic about the possibility of racing in front of his home fans. He revealed how he had to leave the South American nation in 2011 to continue his racing career and going back there as a Cup Series driver and winning a race could be as big as winning the Cup Series championship for the Mexican.
It’s not official until it’s official. Honestly, it would be like a dream to me. I’ve been in the Cup Series already for several years and a race in my native country, it would be like a dream. Since I moved out of my country in 2011, it’s been a dream to come back as a Cup Series driver. And if that’s real, it would be amazing and winning that race for me, it would be as big as winning a championship.Daniel Suarez said in an interview as quoted by The Athletic
Despite such optimism, the No.99 driver admitted that it’s not official until it’s official, revealing the possibility of the rumors being false. Thus, he would have to wait till NASCAR hierarchy makes it official that the series is going global as an announcement is expected soon.
